Who We Are.

1903

An African American woman named Maggie Walker would become recognized as being the first African American to charter a bank and be president of a bank. In a time when being Black and a woman would not only be a disadvantage, but a reason to be treated as less than human. Walker showed us that regardless of our race or gender, we as people of color are able to succeed in the fields of business and finance.

That is where our project began, with Maggie Walker. From the day she chartered the bank, to now, there has been many Black and influential pillars in these industries. Through interviews and acknowledgment of these people, we will give way for future African Americans to succeed in business and finance and obtain the necessary knowledge to become just as and if not more successful than those preceding them.

We at the Maggie Walker Project want to thank everyone who collaborates, interviews, and connects with us. Each of your contributions helps the growth and development of our project and provides greater outreach for the youth in our community.
